The primary pupils celebrate Esala Perahera!

In primary the pupils have been learning about the Buddhist festival Esala Perahera,  which happens in Sri Lanka every August.  As part of this we watched video clips of the elephant procession which included fire dancers.  The pupils were all really interested in the fire dancing and this inspired us to go and ask Mr Pietri to teach us more about light photography.  Watch out for more photos of our own elephant parade, we have made masks and prayer wheels already.

Bloodhound Challenge (8th March 2017)

The BLOODHOUND Project and the STEM Club

BLOODHOUND SSC is a unique, high-technology project to design and build a car that will break the 1,000mph barrier and set a new world land speed record. Designed and constructed in the UK, BLOODHOUND SSC includes components and sponsorship from international companies and will make its record attempt in South Africa. We are sharing this international engineering adventure with a global audience. Why? Because we love science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and BLOODHOUND SSC shows how amazing – and fun – they can be!

The project started on the 10 January 2017, with the visit of Peter Hylton as part of the Bloodhound project presenting to the whole school. He talked about the history of the car and the journey of the world land speed record attempts. He then presented us with the basic car kits needed to construct a model car.
Every Tuesday after school as part of STEM Club (P7 – S4) in teams of three, we shared ideas, researched and designed four model cars to compete in the Orkney round against Sanday. The high stake competition was hosted by the Sanday School.
We started with a whole school assembly to vote for the ‘Best designed car and this round was won by the opposition. The winning team for category ‘Best Engineered Car’ went to Mikey Stevenson, Philip Piper and Elizabeth Miller, named team ‘Cut away’ due to their unique design. The prize was in the form of a well-known streamlined chocolate egg!  The competition then became serious. It was down to speed vs. weight. The fastest and lightest design going through to the next round in Thurso in April. Two fastest cars, coincidentally the winners for best design and best engineered are going forward. Both teams will have the opportunity to rebuild their winning cars for the next round.
