Art London Visit (15/06/2016)

Plus Tate/Pier Arts Centre/OIC London Visit to opening of Tate Modern extension

Former Stronsay Junior High pupil Molly Shearer and our art and design teacher Mrs Brown were selected to go on a trip to London to attend the opening of the new Tate Modern gallery extension.  They travelled to London on the 15th of June 2016 on the sleeper train along with Carol Dunbar from the Pier Arts Centre, Mrs Watson from KGS and four other pupils from KGS and Stromness Academy.  They were the only group from Scotland to attend the event and had travelled further than anyone else to be there, so this was a fantastic opportunity.
The trip included a day of special tours and art activities at the new Tate Modern extension where Molly was chosen to be interviewed by the press and asked about her opinions of the exhibitions and the new part of the building.  The group also visited the Tate Britain gallery, Shakespeare’s Globe theatre and the British Museum amongst other art-based activities.  They travelled back on the 18th of June and attended a printmaking workshop in Inverness with Ade Adesina, an artist in residence at the print studio before travelling with Northlink ferries back to Orkney.  Overall this was a very positive learning experience for pupils, we were pleased to have Stronsay Junior High represented at such an important art and design event.
