"Bridge Building" competition at Orkney College - May 14th, 2014

Orkney Bridge Building Competition!

"On the 14^th of May 2014 Ieuan Evans, Charlie Williams, Erynn Stevenson and Sonya Goodram were chosen to take part in a bridge building competition at the Orkney College. We met up at the pier at 8:30 and waited for everyone to arrive. We got on the boat and had a boring trip (but lots of laughter).

We arrived in at 10:50 and got a taxi to The Orkney College. We went into the building and they started to explain the rules. After that we got started straight away because we already had our design so we didn’t need to plan it. We built our bridge as a team but were very slow at building. In the last ten minutes of building we had to rush to finish the bridge because at that moment we didn’t have a bridge to put in the competition.  In the middle of the day we were just building and all of a sudden we were interviewed and recorded and were on Radio Orkney. We were all ecstatic.

 Our bridge was done and we were ready to test how many bricks it could hold. We went outside to do the testing. Our bridge held 16 bricks and we were hoping that we had won. We went back inside to hear the results. Last place was Stromness,4th was KGS B, 3rd was KGS A. This is the moment we thought to ourselves if Sanday came second we would be first, we were trembling. That was when they sadly announced Stronsay was in second place. ( Unfortunately! ) Sandy came first place with 22 bricks. We were still proud because we beat our Stronsay team from last year. Haha in your face James and Thomas! ;-)

We had a fun trip back and were happy we went on this trip."

Staffing update (English/Support for Learning teaching post)

Update on the recruitment of a full time English/Support for Learning teaching post.

 

We have had two people apply for this post.

The interviews will be held on Tuesday 27^th May. We will keep you informed of the outcome and hope that the successful candidate will live on the Isle.

Leavers' Ceremony

S4s Leavers' Ceremony

"On the 25^th of April 2014 the S3s planned and presented the S4s Leavers' ceremony. Family and friends of the Leavers joined us to celebrate the S4s time at Stronsay School and wish them good luck for their exams and the future. A video of the photos to present day was played then they were presented with gifts including t-shirts for friends and teachers to sign and write little messages on as a reminder bye. Family and friends were welcome to stay and have tea, coffee, homemade cake and cookies made by the S3s. Altogether it was a very emotional day.

The S3s would like to say a big thank you to all the teachers who allowed us to use their lessons as time to plan the ceremony and also to the SOS committee for their very generous contribution towards the Leavers' gifts."

SOS Concert - 15th March 2014

The SOS (Support Our School) Committee held a concert on Saturday 15th March 2014. We raised £547.20  for little extras that the Stronsay Junior High pupils require. Stronsay's SOS (Support Our School) Concert 2014

"On Saturday 15th March 2014 we had an SOS (Support Our School) Concert. We had it to raise money for the school. It started at 7pm and ended at 10.15pm.

On the stage first was Stronsay's Silver Darlings, they were amazing.Then the Lower Primary told the story of 'The Little Red Hen' , they were very loud and clear and great at remembering what they had to do and say at the right time.

Mike Burgher and Bruce Fletcher were up next and while Mike sung about a flea, Bruce played the piano. Millie and Rebecca did ballet and it was beautiful.

Brother Seelos played 'The Entertainer' on the piano and then Brother Martin sung a song. The SOS Singers and Don and Mike sang three songs, it was epic.

The Stronsay Bairns (Upper Primary and Lower Primary) sang three songs called 'Coulter's Candy, Soldier, Soldier and Ye Canny Shove yer Granny aff a bus' and Mr King was granny. Awesome.

Then we had a raffle and there were so many things put in the raffle it took forever to get through it. After the raffle some of the Secondary did dance moves to 'Thriller'. It  was fantastically, fantastic. Then Tilly, Josephine and Mike did some songs. The SAS Singers (Stronsay's Alternative Singers!) sang some songs from the music hall times and their outfits were delightful.

Ingram,Diane and Mike played some songs on harmonica, cello and guitar and Roger told a funny story. Stronsay Strummers played some songs on their guitars and the audience sang.

Jacqui, Diane and Natalie played and sung some songs which included 'Wagonwheel'. Then the SOS Singers, Don and Mike sung a song. At the end, unexpectedly they asked the audience to come on stage and join them to sing it. Their costumes were awesome and cool.The event raised a grand total of £547.20. Thank you everyone who participated, donated raffles and worked to make it a very enjoyable evening."
