Dental Hygiene Talk (27/09/2017)

S3 and S4 students were given the opportunity to explore the sugar content of the foods they eat. Prior to the visit by our dental hygienists Shona and Sharon, students were asked to fill in a food diary that recorded their food and drink intake over three days. During class students were then given the task of totalling their sugar intake for each of these three days, this was worked out as teaspoons of sugar per day. Once completed each student then transferred into a clear zip lock bag the number of teaspoons of sugar that they consumed for either one day or the total of their three days. It was very interesting to compare daily totals with the current recommended amount of 5 teaspoons of sugar per day. I think some of us got quite a shock! The final activity gave students the chance to test the acidity levels of popular carbonated drinks on the market and then link the high acid levels of such drinks to tooth decay. Hopefully we will all be looking after our teeth a little better from now on, including Mrs Barber.

National Fitness Day (27/09/2017)

Both Primary and Secondary students joined together to participate in this year’s event. People across the country were encouraged to take part in this annual celebration of physical activity that aims to get the nation moving more. 10 for 10 aimed to get 10,000 students participating in 10 minutes of physical activity at 10am. The students at Stronsay did not quite make the 10 am goal but they certainly made the 10 minutes one!  The Secondary students joined with the Primary in their “Mile A Day” and certainly had a ‘blast’ , well from the wind at least! Well done everyone.

SOS car wash fund raiser

SOS held a car wash on Saturday to raise funds for the school. It was great to see the island supporting the school as well as lots of shiny cars driving around the isle! Thanks to the SOS members that helped run the event, all those that provided fancies to eat whilst customers waited, those brave souls that allowed people to throw wet sponges at them (Mrs Rose was the storm trooper!), the children who seemed to get wetter than the cars and last but not least our generous customers! We raised £156.00!
